After the game, Emerson Carioca tried to justify himself and said that he had reacted like this to the racial abuse of Maricá players and the coaching staff, who, according to him, had repeatedly insulted him.
Brazilian soccer player Emerson Carioca was sanctioned this Tuesday with eight games for violating disciplinary rules after stripping during a goal celebration, Globo reports.
The 25-year-old, who until recently played for Sampaio Correa, scored the winning goal in a match against Maricá. But Carioca’s celebrations took an unexpected turn when he stripped naked to make fun of the rival team. The soccer player removed his jersey before lowering his shorts and showing his genitals to opposing players, an action that sparked a fight between the two teams.

A disciplinary panel that investigated the player’s behavior found that his actions violated “sports discipline or ethics” and imposed an eight-game suspension on Carioca. His new team, Portuguesa do Rio, appealed the verdict.
After the game, Carioca tried to justify himself in an interview and said that he had reacted in this way to the racial abuse of Maricá players and the coaching staff, who, according to him, had repeatedly insulted him. “The people of Maricá have been slandering me during the last three games that I have played against them. They have called me a pig, an alcoholic and a fat monkey. I was upset by what happened,” he said.
The footballer admitted that he had overdone his celebrations and apologized to his fans and teammates.
