Santiago Vescovi’s Tennessee fell on his visit to Mississippi and reaped his fourth defeat in the NCAA. The Vols had a second half to forget.
On another night of American college basketball the faces Mississippi and Tennessee were seen. In their last presentation, the former had fallen on their visit to Georgia, while the latter easily beat Kansas at home. Those led by Kermit Davis began with Jarkell Joiner, Devontae Shuler, Luis Rodriguez, Robert Allen and Romello White. For their part, those led by Rick Barnes did so with Santiago Vescovi, Jaden Springer, Keon Johnson, Yves Pons and John Fulkerson.
The match played at The Pavilion at Ole Miss presented a favorable start to the visiting team, who with a good offensive contribution from their backcourt made up of Santiago Vescovi and Jaden Springer, managed to open an early lead of six units. A big break from the substitute bench by Josiah-Jordan James, with three triples scored on four attempts, caused the Volunteers to increase the difference in score. The local cast had great problems in defense, while on the other side of the rectangle it depended in excess of what Luis Rodriguez could generate with his one on one. On the closing of the initial stage, Ole Miss managed to make some adjustments behind, which added to a couple of annotations from Romello White, gave him the possibility of narrowing the gap.
At the beginning of the second half, the visit was in front of the electronic office from 28 to 23. In the first bars of the complement, the owner of the house got to a point. However, the Vols responded with a quick 7-0 run, with the figures of Yves Pons and John Fulkerson being important. From that moment on, an extremely imprecise procedure could be observed, in which both teams had problems when scoring. With five minutes remaining in the game, those led by Kermit Davis managed to pass to the front, having as standard bearers Shuler and White. Those led by Rick Barnes were literally left without a goal, receiving a partial 11-1. Despite this, Knoxville’s men had the chance to force the extension in the final seconds with two free kicks by Keon Johnson. The freshman missed one of the personals and the victory went to Mississippi, who prevailed 52-50, reaching a 4-6 record in the SEC, leaving Tennessee with a 5-4 record.
The winner was the performance of Devontae Shuler, who scored 15 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, seconded by Romello White with 14 points and 6 rebounds. On the loser’s side, Frenchman Yves Pons finished as top scorer with 13 points.
Uruguayan point guard Santiago Vescovi spent 28 minutes on the court, in which he contributed 3 points (1/4 triples), 2 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal.
The next commitment of our compatriot’s team will be on Saturday, when as a visitor he has to face the University of Kentucky.
