In recent days, women’s football in Colombia has made the news because of the time that will be allocated to the realization of the professional championship in its fifth edition. In 2017, when the League was released, the tournament was four months, five years later, it will be a month and a half. The tricolor players did not remain silent and published a statement asking for “respect.”
The players of the Colombia National Team joined and signed a press release referring to the situation that “worries them” and is the future of the Women’s League. In the letter they expressed six points, in which they refer to the issue of women’s football in the country.
“We know of the existence of projects to carry out the Women’s League, which has a planning, budget and structure and which were presented to Dimayor, but they have not been taken into account. We are concerned about the immense setback in terms of the duration of the competition since instead of evolving and having more competition each year, continuity is lost. This prevents the necessary visibility for the achievement of sponsorships and clubs interested in investing in women’s football ”, the statement indicates in its first lines.
They ensure that the time of competition that has been raised becomes an “obvious obstacle” for the performance of the players and for them to generate economic resources.
“The Professional League is fundamental for the Colombian Selection processes in its different categories. It is the main stage so that the players can stay in shape and discover new talents for the Colombian National Team and it is a platform for them to have the option to play abroad and acquire more international contact ”, they add.
The selected women from Colombia say that women’s football in Colombia lacks planning. “With sadness we see that there is a lack of commitment and willingness to plan a solid structure that allows us to execute a long-term project. Women’s football in Colombia cannot continue to be treated as an issue that must be complied with, women’s football is a reality and as the highest representatives of sport, it is our duty to raise our voices so that this reality is recognized and respected as part of the processes of a social state of law where equality and the right to decent work are fundamental pillars ”.
They also recalled that since August 9, 2019 (more than 530 days), when the Pan-American champions were left, the FIFA dates have not been used to reunite the team. And they specified that the friendly double against the United States was not scheduled by FIFA date, which prevented the presence of the players who compete abroad. “We need continuity in the concentrations to start preparing for participation in the Copa América 2022, which will be the qualifying championship for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand 2023. We request commitment and determined action from the FCF,” the document concludes.
