MEXICO CITY, Feb 5 (Reuters) – Cruz Azul, one of the most popular clubs in Mexican soccer, posted its third consecutive Guard1anes Clausura tournament win on Friday after winning 2-0 away from Necaxa on matchday five.
Cruz Azul’s “Sky Machine” was the leader of the tournament with nine points, the same as Tijuana and Querétaro, but more goals scored.
The sky blue team went ahead after three minutes when Luis Romo beat goalkeeper Luis Malagón with a shot from outside the area after receiving a pass from Santiago Giménez.
Those led by Peruvian Juan Reynoso increased their lead in the 26th minute with a header from Paraguayan Juan Escobar on a corner kick from the left wing.
The day will continue on Saturday with the matches between Atlas-Santos Laguna, América-Puebla and Monterrey-Pumas UNAM.
On Sunday, Toluca will host Mazatlán, and a day later the champion León will face Guadalajara.
The match between Bravos de Ciudad Juárez and Tigres UANL will be played on April 14 due to the participation of Tigres in the Club World Cup held in Qatar.
