Gilles Villeneuve, Monza and Interlagos, possible scenarios for the tests this year
The idea is to hold a short race on Saturday to set up the Sunday grid
F1 wants to study the possibility of introducing short races in 2022 and for this, it is considering using this season to test it. The experiment consists of celebrating a qualifying on Friday that decides the grid for Saturday’s short race. The result of this short race would establish the order of the usual race on Sunday.
To be tested this year, the F1 Commission will hold a vote this Thursday, in a meeting in which they will also address the issue of whether this short race should count for the World Championship, the issue of tire regulations and the rest of the details , as reported by the Race Fans web portal.
The goal of this new format is to add value to the weekends and offer tighter and more competitive sessions. If it is a success, F1 will consider it to repeat the idea in 2022.
The circuits of Gilles Villeneuve, Monza and Interlagos are the ones that sound a priori for him experiment from this year. The fact that the two American events are broadcast in the afternoon makes Formula 1 think that they can attract a new audience with this change in format.
This is an idea that comes after the Gran Circo has ruled out holding inverted grid races, an option that has been on the table for a long time but has never received the full support of the teams.
If the format changes for 2022 we will know in this second half of the season, when the experiments to find a more attractive F1 can begin.
