The used passenger car market fell in January by 26.4% about the same month of 2020, with sales of 123,213 cars, according to data provided by the National Association of Vehicle Dealers (Ancove). The collapse is significant, as it doubles the average of last year and moves away from more moderate falls in recent months.
At the same time, the average price in January was 16,474 euros in the Spanish market, which represents an increase of 3% compared to December 2020.
Diesel, and between three and five years: the profile that is saved
According to Ancove this pronounced drop in the sale of used vehicles It has no comparison with that experienced in October (-6.3%), November (-6.9%) and December (-5.8%) of 2020.
By age, the market is still fragmented, with an increase in demand for cars between one and three years, although the greatest decrease, 66.5%, is concentrated in units less than 12 months old.
On the latter, explains the association, there is a statistical effect, since last year cars less than 6 months old were included in the aid of the Renove Plan, which triggered zero kilometer sales, and explains the decrease in passenger cars of up to 12 months in the reduction of the number of rental cars.
Regarding cars that are over 3 years old, those from three to five years resist well, whose sales have fallen in January by 9%, but after five years, the decrease is placed above 24%.
Diesel, although it continues to lose share in the second-hand tourism market with a 26.6% drop in January, remains the absolute leader with 60% of total sales. The trend in this market is thus maintained.
For its part, the electric car is rising strongly (+ 48%), but with a small volume of 581 units.
“January has been a catastrophic month for automobiles. Passenger car registrations collapsed by 51% and second-hand cars fell by 26.4%” summarizes the president of the association, Elías Iglesias.
From Ancove they ask to reactivate the Renove Plan -which was closed in December with 200 million not awarded- and to extend the aid to used vehicles for up to five years.
Higher prices in the VO market
Meanwhile, in January the average price of the used car rose slightly (3% to 16,500 euros).
According to data from Coches.net, the average price of the supply of second-hand cars rose in all the autonomous communities during the past month, with the exception of Aragon, where it fell by 0.5%, standing at 14,994 euros.
45% of the models offered exceeded 100,000 km and only 14% had less than 20,000 kilometers.
The models most offered in January they were the Volkswagen Golf, the BMW 3 Series, the SEAT León, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the Audi A4. This explains why the average price has risen: consumers are going to higher-end and more current models.
