Fifteen months later, Southampton suffered a new embarrassment.
The team led by Ralph Hasenhuttl fell again 9-0. And Manchester United were overwhelming at Old Trafford to match the largest margin of victory on record since the Premier League began under that name in 1992.
There have been two other games that have ended with that score. And Southampton was the humiliated team in one of them, falling 9-0 at home to Leicester in October 2019.
The other also involved United, who crushed Ipswich 9-0 in 1995.
“What can I say? It’s horrible, ”Hasenhuttl acknowledged. “But we got up from that first 9-0 and we have to do it again.”
Southampton caused its own debacle, having two players sent off. The first red card was shown just 82 seconds, when 19-year-old midfielder Alexandre Jonkewitz, who played his first start match in the Premier, committed a hard foul on Scott McTominay, raising the studs to the height of the thigh of your rival.
United caught up with Manchester City on points, which leads the league only on goal difference.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani of Uruguay all scored after Jan Bednarek’s own goal, for Man U to go into the break with a 4-0 lead.

Anthony Martial replaced Cavani for the second half and finished scoring twice, the first at 69. Scott McTominay made it 6-0 two minutes later.
“It’s easy to take your foot off the gas, but we didn’t want to do that,” Rashford said. “We continue in the second half the same as in the first.”
At 86 minutes, the moment Bednarek was fired for hitting a Martial that was already down. Southampton were already trailing 6-0 and were struggling to avoid further humiliation.
It did not succeed.
Bruno Fernandes converted the resulting penalty. Another pair of goals, from Martial and Dan James handed Southampton the shameful score that had already suffered.
WOLVES BEAT A CRASHING ARSENAL
Southampton were not the only team to finish Tuesday’s game with nine men.
The expulsions of Brazilian defender David Luiz and goalkeeper Bernd Leno conspired against an Arsenal that collapsed after they succumbed 2-1 on the road to Wolverhampton in the Premier League.
A 1-0 lead thanks to a goal from Nicolas Pepe in the 32nd minute, Arsenal made the harakiri of the expulsion with a direct red from Luiz for driving Willian José when the Brazilian striker of the Wolves burst into the small area. Ruben Neves received the maximum penalty when the fifth minute of discount of the first half was played.
Another Portuguese containment midfielder, Joao Moutinho, ensured victory for the Wolves when he dominated a ball from beyond the crescent and took a shot that first struck a post before nesting in the back of the net at 49.
To add insult to injury, Arsenal were left with nine men from 49, after Leno left the area to clear the ball, misjudged his jump and touched it with his right arm. The German goalkeeper was sent off for missing a scoring chance, under siege from Adama Traore.
The Wolves did not know how to get more out of the numerical superiority, but they managed the minutes with solvency to end Arsenal’s seven-game unbeaten streak in the league, which had brought Mikel Arteta’s team closer to the zone European.
It was the Wolves’ first victory in nine Premier League games since they beat Chelsea 2-1 on December 15.
DECLINE
Sheffield United continued to build momentum in its desperate attempt to save itself from relegation. The bottom came back to defeat West Bromwich 2-1, another team fighting for permanence.
After going winless in the first 17 rounds, an unprecedented streak in the Premier, Sheffield has won three of its last five games. He’s still 10 points away from salvation, but Chris Wilder’s team has regained hope.
For their part, Crystal Palace won 2-1 in their visit to Newcastle, which is now just eight points above the relegation zone.
