The 2021 season threatens to be puzzling. Depending on who answers the question, this season’s vehicles will be identical to those of 2020, or will have a new look.
First F1 Aston Martin since 1960
Otmar Szafnauer joins the second group, that of a new vehicle. And, although the FIA and Formula 1 decided to freeze the vehicles in search of cost containment and causing the same car to be used in both 2020 and 2021, a series of changes and exceptions were introduced that have led to teams to modify elements.
Concerned about the increase in downforce carried out year after year and the stress that this implies for the tires, which were initially for the 2018 season, after the latest advances were rejected, the FIA introduced certain cuts in the background plane with which to drastically reduce downforce, and with it, stress on the tires.
This reduction in load concentrated in the rear has caused the teams to redesign numerous elements which intervene in the aerodynamic flow, even making use of the tokens provided by the FIA and that limit the amount of modifications that the teams can make in this way as the areas to work.
New chassis
“We have had to remodel everything. Although the philosophy is to reuse, we are going to have many new parts in the car, a lot of aerodynamic development and even a new chassis. Szafnauer stated, revealing that both Vettel and Stroll will have a new chassis at their disposal. “Although the vehicle is similar to last year, it is predominantly new”added the Aston Martin.
