Goretzka, Bayern Munich’s big question for the Club World Cup | Sports | DW | Football24 News English

The German national team Leon Goretzka is still in doubt at Bayern Munich, ahead of the Club World Cup that starts this Thursday in Qatar. Days ago, the midfielder tested positive for COVID-19. “Leon will be tested again on Saturday. It will then be decided whether or not to fly with us,” coach Hansi Flick said Wednesday.

The 25-year-old midfielder is still in home isolation as of Friday, as Flick explained. Javi Martínez, who also tested positive and whose isolation ended earlier, also has to pass a negative test. “We have to wait day by day. We also know that with Leon it will take a few more days,” Flick said.

After next Friday’s game against Hertha Berlin, Bayern will travel directly to the Club World Cup in Qatar. In the emirate, Munich wants to win the sixth title in a year. “The team would make history there, that’s our goal,” said Flick.

The club is aware of the dangers of the trip. “It is a major change from the routine we are used to,” Flick stressed. In addition, the trip “implies a great wear and tear.” The winner of the Champions League will play the first match on Monday in the semi-finals. The final and third place will be played the following Thursday.

Palmeiras, from Brazil, winner of the Copa Libertadores, and Tigres from UANL, from Mexico, Concacaf champion will also participate in the tournament.
