With a different shirt, in a familiar setting, the pair became the highest scorer in the history of the NFL postseason with an eight-yard pass on a draw play that Brady cheated with the running back and went to Gronkowski to put the first points for the Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV.
That was the 13th time Tom Brady found his tight end in the postseason to score six points, breaking the tie with Joe Montana Y Jerry Rice as the highest-scoring duo in the playoffs.
This was also the first time a Tom Brady team has scored a touchdown in a Super Bowl.
The eight-yard connection was the pair’s first playoff points since Super Bowl LII against the Philadelphia Eagles, in which Gronkowski scored a pair.
That in turn is the fourth touchdown pass Brady throws to Gronkowski in a game for Vince Lombardi. The first touchdown for which they combined was in Super Bowl XLIX, when Gronkowski when Gronk received a 22-yard pass.
With the eight-yard pass, Gronkowski ties the tie with John Stallworth as the third-most TD catcher in postseason history. Gronkowski is second only to Rice, who captured 22 touchdown passes in the playoffs.
Gronkowski and Brady combined in the second period for another score, this time from 17 yards.
Recovered from a nine-year track record of multiple injuries, Gronkowski returned to the NFL this year after missing the entire 2019 season. Initially, his job on Bruce Arians’ team consisted mostly of blocking. But with OJ Howard’s injury and the advancement of the season, he became more involved in the team’s production.
In the end, Gronk caught 45 passes for 623 yards and seven touchdowns in the regular season.
