The All Star Game is a matter of prestige for the players, of course, uone of the most significant variables on your resume. But it is also, in many cases, an economic question … in the most direct way possible. For the NBA, the weekend of the stars is his great annual party, a showcase in which he shows the world his muscle and his good health as a competition that generates a star system The one who shines on a date that this year is on the ropes due to the pandemic. In fact, the postponement of the event was taken for granted, although the calendar left a few days empty (in principle to give rest to the players and separate the two parts into which the particular calendar of this season has been divided) that could end up being used to make an All Star Game. Not the initial appointment, scheduled for Indianapolis (which will host it in 2024) and with all the usual events of the weekend (triples contest, dunk contest, Rookie Challenge….). No: the NBA is considering organizing (Atlanta sounds like headquarters) only the all-star game, the All Star Game proper.
But one thing is clear: Whether or not there is an All Star Game in 2021 (and there are many voices that criticize that the possibility of doing so is simply considered when the pandemic rages), there will be all stars. The NBA will maintain its selection system among the players who win it so, with or without a game, those who are selected will add 2021 to their All Star history.
As in previous seasons, the choice will be made between the vote of fans (50%), players (25%) and specialized press (25%). On February 4 and 11, the voting process will be announced, on February 16 the deadline will be closed, and on February 18 the ten holders will be announced. On February 23, the reserves (chosen by the coaches) that make up the 24 total players who will be all star in 2021, twelve from each Conference. Each quintet is made up of two players from backcourt (bases and escorts) and three of frontcourt (forwards, power forwards and centers). The seven reserves of each Conference have two, three and two wildcard (players of any position).
All players will be aware of whether or not they are selected, of course, but some more than others. And not only for sporting prestige. On the one hand, there is the economic prize for attending: right now $ 100,000 per head for the members of the winning team and $ 25,000 for those who are defeated. But, in addition, some have clauses in their contracts to apply bonus in case of being chosen for the All Star. They are these:
Jaylen Brown (Boston Celtics): $ 1.3 million extra if it is all star
Domantas Sabonis (Indiana Pacers): 1.3 million
Kevin Durant (Brooklyn Nets): 1 millón
Buddy Hield (Sacramento Kings): 1 million
Julius Randle (New York Knicks): 945.000 dólares
TJ Warren (Indiana Pacers): 750.000
Gary Harris (Denver Nuggets): 750.000
Kyle Lowry (Toronto Raptors): 500.000
Evan Fournier (Orlando Magic): 500.000
Aaron Gordon (Orlando Magic): 500.000
Jrue Holiday (Milwaukee Bucks): 250.000
Thaddeus Young (Chicago Bulls): 100.000
Rudy Gobert complained bitterly about not being an all-star in 2019 and succeeded, for the first time in his career, at Chicago 2020. The French pivot has already raised his salary this season by one million thanks to this condition. In October 2016, he signed an extension for four years and 102 million. For this season, he had 25.7 million that rose to more than 27 totals thanks to his being all star. In December of this year, Gobert signed a new extension with the Jazz that will take effect from next season: five years and 205 million.
