RB Leipzig, who beat Bochum (2nd division) 4-0, and Wolfsburg, who eliminated Schalke 04 with a 1-0, advanced to the quarterfinals of the German Cup on Wednesday, where Cologne, eliminated in Eighths for Ratisbon, in the second category, in the penalty shootout.
After Bayer Leverkusen’s disaster on Tuesday when they were eliminated by Essen (4th category), RB Leipzig and Wolfsburg, second and third respectively in the Bundesliga standings, were on alert and avoided any surprise.
Bochum had no choice against Leipzig, which is having a good season and the only one that seems to be able to stand up to Bayern Munich, which is seven points behind in their league standings.
Leipzig sealed their passage to the Cup quarter-finals without complications.
Malian Amadou Haidara (11th minute) put the team ahead, assisted by Austrian Marcel Sabitzer, who signed the second of his team by transforming a penalty in the first half discount (45 + 1).
In the second part, the Danish Yussuf Poulsen put the final sentence with a double (66 and 75), in both cases assisted by a Spanish player, Dani Olmo in the first case and then by Angeliño.
“I am happy to have helped the team with these two goals. In the second half we were better and we did not let them do much. It is a deserved victory,” Poulsen celebrated after qualifying for the quarterfinals.
RB Leipzig continue to advance in the tournament and remain the main favorites for the title, as defending champions Bayern Munich were eliminated in the round of 32 last month, against Holstein Kiel (2nd division).
With no titles to its name in its short life (founded in 2009), Leipzig seem to be facing a great opportunity to lift their first trophy. He was already close in 2019 in the German Cup, but then he was beaten in the final by Bayern Munich.

For their part, Wolfsburg beat Bundesliga bottom side Schalke 04 1-0 at the Volkswagen Arena.
The Dutch Wout Weghorst got the only goal of the match, in 40, being the fastest in search of the rejection just after missing a penalty.
Weghorst continues at a time of great inspiration. In the Bundesliga he has thirteen goals and is the offensive leader of his team.
Schalke 04 will now concentrate their efforts on their priority until the end of the year, to avoid relegation. The mission does not seem easy for the historic Gelsenkirchen team, sunk bottom, with just one win so far this season.
This Wednesday, the most unexpected result occurred in Regensburg, where the local team, from the second division, came back from 2-0 against Cologne and forced extra time.
In the penalty shootout he was able to get rid with a 4-3 from Cologne, who lived a nightmare night and who in the final stretch of the ninety regulation minutes had seen his player Emmanuel Dennis miss a penalty that would have given him victory before the extension.
In the other match on Wednesday, Borussia Mönchengladbach won 2-1 in Stuttgart, in a first-class match. Marcus Thuram and Alassane Plea scored their team’s winning goals.
On Tuesday, Bayer Leverkusen’s loss to Rot-Weiss Essen (West Regional, 4th category) 2-1 in extra time was the surprise.
Borussia Dortmund needed extra time to win 3-2 at Paderborn (2nd division), but were able to avoid elimination.
Werder Bremen and Holstein Kiel, the second team that was Bayern’s executioner in the previous round, also sealed their passage to the quarterfinals.
