MAZATLÁN – After the Aguilas de Mexicali scored in the fifth inning of the 2017 semifinal against Cuban team Granma, Mexico has compiled 22 consecutive innings without scoring a run in the Caribbean Series playoffs.

Mexico, which has played five Finals since 2013 when for the first time the format of six games with two rounds was put aside for the first time to define the champion, is for the seventh time in a ‘postseason’ of the Caribbean Series in nine years.

On Friday night, at 8:00 p.m. local time (22 ET), the Tomateros de Culiacán will face the Criollos de Caguas in the semifinal of the Caribbean Series. Major League Baseball star Yadier Molina participates with the Puerto Ricans.

After winning three titles from 2013 to 2016, Mexico returned to the Final in 2017 playing at home in Culiacán and the Puerto Rican Criollos de Caguas defeated Mexicali 1-0 in 10 innings, to add 13 episodes without stepping on the plate.

The day before, in the semifinal, in the last three innings against Cuba they went blank after scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning the race they won 1-0.

After being eliminated in the first round in 2018 and 2019, Mexico had the Tomateros as representatives in 2020 and faced the Venezuelan team Cardenales de Lara in the semifinal losing 1-0, to reach the country 22 innings without a run.

The Tomateros individually, have 10 episodes without scoring in the playoffs, after doing so for the last time in the eighth inning against Pinar del Río, of Cuba, in the 2015 Final.
